This book is not bravado of someone who was the world's greatest aviator nor is it the story of some heroic deed in a flying machine. Rather it is a true account of a regular guy from the industrial Midwest and a blue-collar family, who ventured out on a quest that everyone said was impossible. In the 8th grade the author set his sights on becoming a professional pilot. At that same time, he came across a flyer for the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida and decided this was the place to make his plan a reality. Of course, being from a working-class family, the expense of the school would require him to work his way through, and never quit. Being 1,200 miles away from home and far from relatives, this fish out of water would have to develop one core principle, other than a good sense of humor, in order to survive and succeed.
